Yoga, Reading Club and Escape Rooms

Summer has arrived, and the Niagara Falls Public Library is busy with something for everyone! Be sure to pick up our Summer Library Magazine to learn about all the exciting programs and events happening this summer.

Once again the Niagara Falls Public Library has partnered with the TD Summer Reading Club to promote a love for reading long after school is over. Stop by any library location to pick your free registration kit. The TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest bilingual summer reading program, where kids of all ages, interests and abilities can read books, have fun and earn prizes. Back by popular demand: read for beads! Build your own personalized bead necklace, bracelet or keychain one book at a time.

Summer Reading Drop-In Fun has started at the Niagara Falls Public Library. There’s more to summer reading than books and beads. Kids of all ages can drop-in to the library and explore a whole bunch of different hands-on games and activities! Come by Victoria Avenue on Mondays, Stamford on Tuesdays, Chippawa on Wednesdays and Community Centre on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and explore. Drop-In fun will start the week of July 8th.

This summer we will be taking our Summer Reading Club on the road! From July 2 - August 23 our library staff will be popping up at Niagara Falls Parks and Pools! Be sure to check out our Parks and Pool Outreach Calendar to find out where we will be. Come say hi, participate in Summer Reading and play fun games!

The TD Summer Reading club isn’t just for kids! Teens! Do you love escape rooms? So do we! Visit our website throughout the summer to beat our online escape rooms. Each escape room you beat gives you a chance to win prizes. Be sure to complete all five online escape rooms throughout the summer to maximize your chance to win! Or if you’re bored, drop by the Victoria Avenue Library’s Oakes Room Media Lab for a couple hours of creativity with audio and video recording, photo editing, 3D printing and musical instruments.

For adults, there’s Summer Reading Bingo. Pick up a bingo card at any library location! Get a bingo and return your card by August 18th for your chance to win a prize.

We also have Summer Yoga and Meditation at our Victoria Library. This combination gentle yoga and meditation class is the perfect addition to your mid-summer mornings. Whether you are just learning about meditation or yoga or are seeking to deepen your practice, we welcome you to join us Wednesday in July at 11:00 a.m.

Becky Dixon is a Community Development and Programming Librarian.

Library Notes

For the most part, we have been enjoying some pleasant weather this month in Niagara Falls. Of course, this has not always been the case. Ninety-nine years ago, it was an entirely different story.

Science Literacy Week runs from September 16th to the 22nd. While many of us may think that it’s aimed mostly at kids and teens, the truth is that everyone can celebrate science and oceans research in Canada.

September is an exciting time of year, and Niagara Falls Public Library is ready to celebrate with fun programs and events.

Be sure to pick up our Fall 2019 magazine to learn about all the exciting programs and events happening.

With September just around the corner, we at the Niagara Falls Public Library are excited to once again offer a full slate of Mental Health and Wellness programming to connect you with others and help you feel your best as summer fades away and the days start to get shorter, darker, colder.

Honeymoons and the City of Niagara Falls have gone hand in hand for a very long time, with the first documented Niagara Falls honeymoon occurring in June of 1801. Theodosia Burr (the American vice president’s daughter) and her husband Joseph Alston visited the city on a delayed honeymoon that even included a visit with the famous Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant.

There’s no denying that so far it has been one scorcher of a summer. Every day seems hotter than the last and that humidity is enough to make a stone sweat!

Luckily for you, each branch of the Niagara Falls Public Library comes equipped with air conditioning and a number of fabulous cookbooks you can borrow to whip up some wonderful frozen desserts that will help you chill out.

As we enjoy the summer weather, thoughts of cooling off may sometimes cross our minds. Some of us may have fond memories of a few local swimming spots that were once used to beat the summer heat. For more than 35 years, thousands of children and adults made the Cyanamid swimming pool their summer destination of choice.

At the Library, we truly appreciate the outpouring of support for the Interlibrary Loan Service (ILLO) at the Niagara Falls Public Library (NFPL) after the elimination of the ILLO Delivery Service.  We understand the meaningful impact the service has had on many of our customers. As we know how things change in the world, so it does in the Library world.
