Grow your gardening knowledge

Niagara Falls Public Library launched its Seed to Seed collection May 17.

If you come to any of the library's four locations across Niagara Falls you can "borrow" up to three packages of seeds.

After you've planted the seeds and harvested your vegetables, you can set aside some seeds to give back to the library so another person can enjoy the collection.

The library has a variety of vegetable seeds for you to choose from and the seed packages include some basic planting and harvesting instructions.
However, for those whose thumbs are not so green and for gardening newbies, the basic instructions might not be enough.

Fortunately the library is full of incredible gardening resources. The following books will help novice and seasoned gardeners alike.

"Canadian Gardener's Guide 3rd Edition"
Lorraine Johnson

This handy all-in-one manual is geared toward Canadian gardeners and includes important information such as how to harvest vegetables in a short growing season and gardening in cold frames.

"The New Organic Grower: A Master's Manual of Tools and Techniques for the Home and Market Gardener, 30th Anniversary Edition"
Eliot Coleman

If you're interested in organic farming, then this is the book for you. Originally published 30 years ago, this anniversary edition of Coleman's book is as important now as it was back then. It includes timeless and updated information about organic farming for any grower using 2.5 acres or less.

"Bug-free Organic Gardening: Controlling Pest Insects without Chemicals"
Anna Hess

Hess' little book is similar to Coleman's but on a smaller scale and is aimed at beginners. In it you'll learn excellent organic pest-control tricks such as succession planning, shielding plants with row covers, and so much more.

"The Edible Garden: Grow Your Own Vegetables, Fruits & Herbs No Matter Where You Live"
The editors of Country Gardens magazine

This book is a great place to start if you're looking to start a garden. It includes a crop guide that tells you all about the varieties of a plant and about when and how to plant it, as well as some great suggestions on how to assess your own gardening space and environment.

"The Food Lover's Garden: Growing, Cooking, and Eating Well"
Jenni Blackmore

Blackmore's book guides readers through the entire food process. It begins with necessary gardening tools to have on hand before you plant, followed by growing instructions, and even includes recipes for preserving your veggies after the harvest.

To borrow these or any of our other fabulous gardening resources, call the library at 905-356-8080 or visit one of our four locations and a staff member will be happy to assist you.

What is the most priceless possession you own? Some might say their home, or their car, while others may say a precious family heirloom. The things that are priceless to us are felt on an emotional level, deep within us. That is exactly what the MasterCard credit card company knew all those 23 years when it launched its now affectionately known priceless ad campaign.

2019 was an exciting year for the Niagara Falls Public Library. We hosted some incredible programs, introduced some amazing new collections, and had a lot of fun. However, it was you, the customer, that really made last year so wonderful.

While doing some research the other day, I came across the name of a hotel that I had never heard of before. This is probably due to the fact that there is very little information to be found about the Bath House Hotel.
