Oakes Room Media Lab

The Sir Harry Oakes Room was home for many years to our collection of Local History books, Oakes Room Guitarbut, to preserve the historic volumes better, they were moved to climate-controlled storage. The Oakes Room has been repurposed as a Recording Studio, Video Editing Lab, and 3D Printing Makerspace. 

We have professional quality software on two new 27" iMacs, along with condenser mics, lighting, a green screen and other equipment for recording and editing music and videos. A Yamaha Digital Piano is also available. It's all absolutely free at the library!

There are two models of 3D printers available - MakerBot, for plastic prints and Formlabs Form 2, a resin printer. Make jewellery, figurines, tools and whatever else you would like! Order a print below!

The Oakes Room will also host our ongoing computer classes and Tech training. Be sure to drop by soon and check it all out.

There are three groups of equipment that can be selected after a room has been booked:
1) Yamaha Digital Piano
2) Audio Recording and Editing workstation, which includes 27" iMac with Audacity and Garageband software, Studio Speakers, Mics with cables and stand, mixer, audio interface.
3) Video Recording and Editing workstation, which includes 27" iMac with iMovie,  Blender, GIMP and Inkscape software, Canon Vixia HF G20 Video Camera, Green Screen and Lighting kit.

Audio & Video Recording and 3D Printing Classes

Introduction to 3D Printing

 In this 60-minute introduction, NFPL Studio staff will show attendees how to use our 3D printers (A Formlabs Form 2 stereolithography resin printer and a MakerBot 2X). Our current printing process involves submission of a 3D object through a form (available here). This session will assist potential users in getting the most out of this service. We will cover:

-How to use the equipment properly and safely
-The rules and guidelines to using the 3D printer
-How to prepare 3D files for printing 
-Safe and acceptable use of equipment and tools 
-An overview of policies and procedures governing the use of 3D printers

Do you have a song, podcast, or other sort of audio/visual performance you want to record, edit, or master? Interesting in remixing or video editing? Don’t have the equipment at home? The NFPL is now your place to create.

This 60-minute presentation will showcase the tools and software available in the NFPL’s Oakes Room Media Lab. 

This is not a hands-on training session, but the workstations and tools will be available for demonstration. Ideally, attendees will leave this session equipped to begin using the NFPL’s studio independently, however, more involved classes will be available along with additional one-to-one training sessions. The Lab will be open for two hours following each session.
