Library the place to be on a Friday night

Clifton Hill, Casino Niagara, Niagara Parks Commission — as much as there is to do in Niagara Falls, there's not always a lot for residents, especially if you're not looking to spend much money.

Sleep Cheap is great, but the rest of the year there's always Niagara Falls Public Library.

We offer a full slate of free things to do for Niagarans of all ages, from story times to maker workshops, musical performances to history talks. Even when nothing in particular is happening, the four Niagara Falls Public Library branches are relaxed civic spaces where anyone can spend some time reading, working or just being around other people.

The library closes at 5 p.m. on Fridays, but the fun continues well into the evening with our new After Hours program series. Starting at 7 p.m. on almost any given Friday we'll be doing something interesting at the Victoria Avenue library, 4848 Victoria Ave. at Morrison Street. So far, since our soft launch in October, we've had a performance by the PK Hummingbird steel drum band, a performance by the Niagara Symphony Orchestra String Quartet, a Diwali celebration hosted by Niagara Hindu Samaj, a talk on CBT for sleep with a local psychologist, a paint night, a screening of the Emilio Estevez film "The Public" accompanied by a discussion on homelessness, and more.

On Nov. 22, we've got author Sheri MacDonald sharing highlights from her new book, "100 Things to Do in Canada Before You Die." On Dec. 6, Karl Dockstader and Sean VanderKlis will be returning to NFPL with their One Dish, One Mic podcast, leading one of our Let's Talk About Reconciliation Film Dialogues following a screening of the 1998 documentary "The Gift," which explores the importance of corn in the lives of Indigenous peoples in the Americas.

On Friday, Dec. 20, pianist Luis Molina Gonzalez will do a holiday concert with a number of musical guests performing on voice, winds, strings and piano. As the new year dawns, Niagara Falls Poetry Project creator Andrew Porteus will do a talk exploring the history of Niagara Falls as seen through poetry.

So if you're looking for something to do at 7 p.m. on a Friday night in Niagara Falls, look no further. The library may look closed. The parking lot may look empty. But there's usually something free happening after hours. For more information call 905-356-8080 or visit your neighbourhood branch. It's going to be a long winter. The temptation to stay home will be strong. Instead, stay warm with us at the Victoria Avenue Library.

Chevron. Handlebar. Fu Manchu. Yes, Movember is upon us and seeing as we’re more than halfway through the month those moustaches should be fully grown! While the facial hair keeps things fun, it’s important to remember that the purpose of it all is to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Every year on Nov. 11, Canadians pause in silence to remember the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve Canada during times of war and peace.

It seems hard to imagine that today, there are approximately 14,000 hotel and motel rooms available for visitors in the city of Niagara Falls. Because of our famous location, the city's hotel industry has a long and intriguing history. One such hotel that might not be as widely known as its more famous neighbours is the Hotel Lafayette.

For the most part, we have been enjoying some pleasant weather this month in Niagara Falls. Of course, this has not always been the case. Ninety-nine years ago, it was an entirely different story.

Science Literacy Week runs from September 16th to the 22nd. While many of us may think that it’s aimed mostly at kids and teens, the truth is that everyone can celebrate science and oceans research in Canada.
