Emancipation Day Book List

August 1 marks the day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire. Last year, the House of Commons voted unanimously to designate August 1 as Emancipation Day across Canada - a day to celebrate, educate, and reflect on what freedom means.
Here are a few titles in our collection that are about or honour Emancipation Day.
  • Odysseys Home: Mapping African-Canadian Literature by George Elliott Clarke (Borrow)
  • The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Old Montreal by Afua Cooper (Borrow)
  • Emancipation Day: Celebrating Freedom in Canada by Natasha L. Henry (Borrow)
  • Any Known Blood by Lawrence Hill (Borrow)
  • My Brother's Keeper: African Canadians and the American Civil War by Bryan Prince (Borrow)
  • The Underground Railroad: Next Stop, Toronto! by Adrienne L. Shadd, Afua Cooper, and Karolyn Smardz (Borrow)
  • Blacks in Canada: A History by Robin W. Winks and George Elliott Clarke (Borrow)
