Is it time to declutter?

The holidays are over and spring is just around the corner so it sounds like a good time to purge, as they say, all that is unnecessary and start fresh. This may be easier said than done. For some of us, it means clearing out all that we had collected in 2020 and packing it up for donation or worse yet, the landfill! For the rest of us, it may just mean a lot more than just last year’s purchases.
There is no shortage of material written on the important subject of decluttering. For example, if you want to dig deep into the history of it, there’s Clutter: an untidy history by Jennifer Howard. If you’re looking to get yourself and your home fit, there’s Lose the clutter, lose the weight : the six-week total-life slim down by Peter Walsh. Let’s not forget about the beloved Marie Kondo who has written many books but especially, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up:The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. The title of Marie’s book reminds me of how books, reading and all that the Library has to offer can be ‘life-changing’. These titles and more on decluttering are available at the Niagara Falls Public Library.
As the province has put Niagara in the red zone, the Niagara Falls Public Library is once again open for customers to come in and browse for materials (3 cheers!) Life at the Library changes in the red zone and we are able to offer such in-person services such as printing, photocopying, computer access, study space and of course browsing and borrowing. While you can collect new materials to take home from the library, you can declutter just as easy by returning your library materials to one of our four library location dropboxes 24/7. It’s that easy.
At last check, I had over 40 (the number is probably higher) notifications in my personal email inbox. Weekly notifications that inform me of the latest clothing sales, headline news, social media trends, grocery specials and even one to let me know that it’s garbage day. While a good idea at the time, I’m sure there’s a few of those that could go in my spring decluttering. If you subscribe to email, why not consider adding your address to our e-newsletter, MyNFPL Insider mailing list. The e-newsletter comes out only once a month and will not clutter your inbox as it is a brief, easy-to-read guide to upcoming events, programs and services at your Library - this one is a keeper! To sign up for the Library e-newsletter, go to the Library website at my.nflibrary.ca and click on the orange button at the bottom of the page - Sign Up for E-Newsletter.
The Library can provide you with some much needed guidance in your quest to declutter. To put a hold on some decluttering books or any materials you might like, please check out our website at my.nflibrary.ca, give us a call at 905-356-8080 or email us at askus@nflibrary.ca.
